This book is rich in profound wisdom, which does not beat around the bush but addresses with stark, incisive honesty the racial, social, and political oppression of the disinherited. Thurman elucidates the distinction between the religion about Jesus from the religion of Jesus, and lays out the psychological tools of fear, deception, and hatred which can only be overcome by love between freed souls.

I really appreciated Thurman’s realism and hope, rooted in the truth of Jesus’s life, one that has not been whitewashed or stripped bare of its transformative and revolutionary power. I can see how this inspired MLK, Jr. and hope to read more of Thurman.

An incredibly powerful challenge to live in a different way.

It is short and sweet and simple and puts Jesus at the center of empathy and social reform. I think this is a good read for anyone- its a book meant for the marginalized AND those who marginalize.

A powerful thesis that examines the mentality of Jesus while working to define tools used against the underprivileged, such as hatred and fear. I also found the chapter on love to raise a series of questions we absolutely have to ask ourselves. Truly a timeless work. It was relevant when first published and even more so today.
