I first heard about this book because of the rumored fact that MLK Jr carried this around with him and/or was heavily influenced by it. I thought this was a particularly timely read given the current political climate. Although this is ostensibly a Christian themed text, wisdom is wisdom is wisdom.

From the chapter on Hate:
"During times of war hatred becomes quite respectable, even though it has to masquerade often under the guise of patriotism. ... When hatred serves as a dimension of self-realization, the illusion of righteousness is easy to create. Often there are but thin lines between bitterness, hatred, self-realization, defiance, and righteous indignation. ... Hatred cannot be controlled once it is set in motion."

And from the chapter on Fear:
"Nothing less than a great daring in the face of overwhelming odds can achieve the inner security in which fear cannot possibly survive."

This is one of those books that I kept marking section after section (which I never used to do, I generally don't like marking in books) because so much of what he discusses is relevant and insightful to existing social situations. A healthy addition to any library.

Is it possible for me to have immense respect for Thurman without liking this book? Blame it on my own conflicted relationship with liberation theology.

Explores Christ as resistance leader via ongoing parallels between Jews in Rome and the descendants of slaves in America. Amazing reading for anyone who's ever felt frustrated or disgusted by the coopting of christianity as a tool of oppression. Prescient, insightful, and almost painfully relevant. (also totally available as a PDF floating around the internet, so you should totally read it because it's short and extremely worthwhile)

Great short theology book about what Jesus has to say to those who are not in positions of power. Not systematic theology at all, but way more practical.
