Someday I will try an egg perfectly poached, but for now I will simply succumb to the inevitable at the breakfast counter

"Not many people think of calling on a philosopher in an emergency, yet the most exciting and most useful things in the world have been born simply by someone thinking about them."

I always love Snicket's witty writing style, dark humour, and fascinating premises, and this was no exception. The story is meandering, mesmerising, and manages to be both a lot of fun and also a serious and quite devastating commentary on life, death, and much in between. I will admit that I felt a little disappointed by the conclusion to the mystery of the breakfast poison at first, but soon realised it actually makes perfect sense and really works with the book's overall tone and messages. his book won't be for everyone, but I loved it, and I'm so glad that Snicket is an author I can continue to enjoy new books from as an adult after being such a huge fan when I was younger.
