The book got depressing and lost vision after the death of his friend. Prior to this, it remained engaging light hearted and well paced. At the end it dropped off.

I love the setting(s). In particular, the novel is like a love letter to Bombay.
Lin is an interesting narrator, if not a particularly likeable one. The many characters are vividly drawn. I was especially fond of Prabaker. It’s an action-heavy novel that also contains a lot of introspection and some philosophy, such as Khaderbhai’s theory of objective morality.
The style can irk, though. Roberts doesn't seem aware that Lin, clearly modeled on himself, is totally obnoxious. I could have done without 95% of Lin's moralizing. Roberts is also prone to really long, florid descriptions of scenery and people with some rather silly metaphors/ similes. I especially tired of his many, many expositions on the color of Karla’s eyes.

Vivid depiction and amazing story. Filled with tenuous and cringe-worthy metaphors.
