Chloe Gong putting me behind on my reading challenge again because her books are so damn long šŸ˜…

So, I loved it. I get why people say the second book is better than the first, because in terms of character interaction/profiles/development, it did much more. The plot was thicc, the pace was fast but still allowed for funny moments or background information, the setting and atmosphere were immersive.

Then why do I not rate it 5 stars, you ask? I ask myself the same question. I can't quite put my finger on what was lacking, and therefore you probably shouldn't take my review too seriously. It was a great retelling of what we know to be Romeo and Juliet. I think now, whenever Shakespeare's play is mentioned, I will think about Gong's Romeo and Juliet, too, and I believe that is no small feat.

I love the storyline and the way in which the book was written. Gong writes in such an easy-to-read way without it being too boring or repetitive. The only downside is how stressed I was the entire time! It felt like the plot moved so quickly and so many things were happening. I was so nervous for all of the characters and didnā€™t feel like I could rest until the book was done.

this story definitely isn't the best of this genre but it sure was entertaining.

I finished it in 3 days (2, technically, because I read until 3 am to finish it) and I was not expecting me to be kicking my blanket and silent screaming at the last 100 pages. while I do wish some things were built on more than they were, there was some really nice payoff
yes, I'm talking about when Benedikt found out that Marshall was alive
to things set up in the previous book. I'm glad they managed to tie the monster with the blood fued; I feel like that's one of the things I was missing in the previous book.

as for the plot twists, there were a lot and I can say that I clocked some of them very quickly
Rosalind and Dimitri
, but again some others I don't think were as built up as I would've wanted them to be
Marshall and General Shu
. they were still entertaining and I wasn't looking for a serious book to dissect the craft of. this sucked me in and I really don't know what it was about it.

definitely need to read the Last Violent Call sometime soon. I don't think I'm ready to let the main characters go quite yet.

I really enjoyed this book, but for some reason the first third of it felt really slow, like nothing was happening with the plot or the characters. I adore the entire cast and while the ending is heartbreakingly beautiful it has less weight for me because I feel like we are mislead and I donā€™t have to wait to read more books in this world. The tension of this love story against all odds is so good. I appreciated that Juliette and Roma couldnā€™t fix everything happening to their city during this political upheaval. I loved seeing the growth and change in these characters as their world was changing.

This book was absolutely incredible, I loved every single page, I was hooked, it was almost overwhelming from how much I felt while reading it, I still have troubles thinking straight and putting my thoughts into words.
The writing was amazing, Chloe Gong is incredible, the plot was super interesting and the tension so well displayed.
I love the relationship between the characters but not just the main couple but between every characters.
This duology truly was an adventure.

I don't know why I was not expecting them to die at the end, it is a Romeo and Juliet retelling, of course they would die, but it still somehow surprised me. But I like the fact that it is still a bit blurry wether they are dead or not.
Their improvised wedding got me kicking my feet, Roma's vows?? What a man.
Marshall and Benedikt own my heart, I've been waiting for them to confess for so long and it didn't disappoint.
I love how in love Roma and Juliette are and how they are everything to each other, it made my heart beat so fast, they are my fav book couple for a reason.
When it was near the end and they were trying to escape I almost forgot about the madness until the final scene when the insects came out, because their romance and despair was all I had in my mind.

"These violent delights have violent ends."

This story too shows similarities with Shakespeareā€™s Romeo and Juliet. I donā€™t want to spoil it, so youā€™ll see when you read it. Just read itā€¦!

The tables have turned and thereā€™s so much chaos. In the previous book, Roma kept a secret from Juliette and protected her whilst Juliette held a grudge against Roma for betraying her. Now it is Juliette who is trying to protect Roma. So to sum it up: lovers turned enemies turned lovers turned enemies again.
It was a little frustrating, because I felt like she should have told Roma and they could have figured it out together. Like he said:
ā€œYou think so intently of protecting me that you did not consider whether I wanted to be protected. I would have rather died knowing you are as you are than lived a long life thinking you cruel.ā€
But of course as soon as Tyler notices Julietteā€™s misstep, he would swoop in and take over everything. The frictions were already escalating between the gangs, so Juliette is forced to pick a side.

There were so many emotional moments: Benediktā€™s grief,
Rosalindā€™s and Tylerā€™s fate. Juliette did what she had to do to save Roma, but it broke my heart when she looked back to her past interactions with Tyler.
On the other hand, there were some very adorable moments as well, for example
when Roma and Juliette get married in secret! And the cute nicknames they have for each other! Oh, my heartā€¦
ā€œI take you, Juliette Cai,ā€ Roma whispered in concentration, ā€to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, untilā€¦ā€ He looked up as he finished the knot. Paused. When he spoke again, he did not look away. "No, scratch that. To have and to hold, where even death cannot part us. In this life and the next, for however long our souls remain, mine will always find yours. Those are my vows to you.ā€

"Together or not at all, dorogaya," Roma whispered back. "I'm with you if we run. I'm with you if we fight."
No, Iā€™m not crying. Youā€™re crying!
