A collection of early 20th century science fiction (1905-1930) which I really enjoyed. [b:The Machine Stops|4711854|The Machine Stops|E.M. Forster|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347943820l/4711854._SY75_.jpg|4776249] by EM Forster is a favourite of mine but the other 6 in the collection I had not read before. The themes range from a feminist utopia, [b:Sultana's Dream|948061|Sultana's Dream|Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347624935l/948061._SX50_.jpg|932986] (by a Bengali woman in 1905!); a shipwrecked couple suffering from a weird disease, [b:The Voice in the Night|10256532|The Voice in the Night|William Hope Hodgson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1295373144l/10256532._SX50_.jpg|15156797]; Arthur Conan Doyle’s [b:The Horror of the Heights|17971518|The Horror of the Heights|Arthur Conan Doyle|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1369289729l/17971518._SX50_.jpg|25192590] is about upper atmosphere air travel! The final two stories are excellent. [b:The Comet|7241256|The Comet|W.E.B. Du Bois|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1267347974l/7241256._SY75_.jpg|6588926] by [a:W.E.B. Du Bois|10710|W.E.B. Du Bois|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1211293877p2/10710.jpg] explores race in a post apocalypse world where there appears to be only two survivors, a working class black man and a young rich white woman. [b:The Jameson Satellite|6356127|The Jameson Satellite|Neil R. Jones|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328309971l/6356127._SX50_.jpg|6542842] by [a:Neil R. Jones|897427|Neil R. Jones|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] is a far future story when immortal aliens discover a dead earth and a satellite coffin with the remains of a man in it. The only lowlight for me was [b:The Red One by Jack London|54847651|The Red One by Jack London (illustrated)|Jack London|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1596848936l/54847651._SY75_.jpg|85976988] . I just found the overt ugly racism made it impossible for me to engage in the story of an alien object worshipped by Solomon Islanders.
