Read the first "heroic story" -- intriguing, but quickly decided I didn't love the writing and decided not to continue with the other four.

This was a really good book. If you like to read about the psychological make up of different individuals this would be a good read for you. It was not overly technical, there were not too many gory details, and it was very educational. Of particular interest to me was chapter 3 which was the story of a man who was taken from his parents as a child as an indigenous person. I had never learned much about the story of the Canadian boarding schools and the effects that that hat on the indigenous children and their parents at the time.

Heartbreaking stories. Amazing to read about how they overcame. TW sexual abuse and neglect.
