Book club with Milo continues. These short, beginner chapter books are always iffy. I've read from this series before and it's decent. This one started off with the typical bully story, though it did get a little more interesting and wasn't completely cliche.

She really went in hard with the gender roles.

Highly disappointing. This book is about a kid being bullied, and not only does it send the terrible message that an 8-year old child should have to resolve it on their own, but the adults do further damage by saying "let's ruin EllRay's Disneyland reward by inviting the bully along to help them get to know each other better". Additionally, lots of troubling negative gender stereotyping. I liked when classmates got involved on behalf of EllRay and wish more focus would have been on that especially since EllRay as a character has a great deal of promise.

This was a good read aloud is it brought up lots of discussion in our house. We will check out the next one in this series. I thought that the kids were very believable characters.

This book mentions fictitous Southern California city, but could be placed anywhere--except for the big bribe (I mean, treat) Disneyland. Good book on bullying with an interesting resolution.
