I started reading this thinking it would be a fast and cute/quirky read, and then I quickly fell out of love with it and left for a month. With another lockdown I had time to just sit with it all the way through and then I found out why it didn’t stick with me - there was nothing to hang my attention or hopes on. If you know what I mean? The book isn’t long, ca 125 pages, but it could have been a novella.
We follow Mathea who is old and looking back on a life unlived and wanting to remedy this before she kicks the bucket. However, she has social anxiety and does the absolute least to actually create adventure. Getting a kick out of someone asking for the time and telling them, carefully planned trips to the story to minimize human interaction. I get it, I have social anxiety so I recognize these feelings, I just think the story could have had more focus. It feels like a hyperactive situation with an unreliable narrator. Is anything she is saying true? Cause to me it feels like it’s not always reality. And when the lines between reality and fantasy start to blur, the book, to me, becomes a little irritating.
I also didn’t really feel her age in this at all. I see the attempt, her landline etc. but then she recognizes all caps as “screaming font” which I’m not sure 90 year olds do.
It was just ok for me, 2,5 stars.
The writing slightly reminded me of Lily and the Octopus, which I would recommend that if you like this sort of book!

“Now that I’m lying in bed, I’m the opposite of impatient. I’m wishing I could save what little I have left of my life until I know exactly what to do with it.”

Dealing with the loss of a loved one and then finding out that you have no identity or function without your partner. Not wholly success dealing with these complicated themes.

Tragikomisk er temaet.
Stor bok i lite format. Her har forfatteren fått ned mye på relativt få linjer. Godt gjort Skomsvold!
