This was a challenging read. It forces you to think about your perception of reality and whether you are seeing what is really there or if you are seeing what you want to see so as not to “make waves”. It forces you to ask the difficult questions of what is real and what is only a facade. You’re forced to confront what monstrosities, we, as humans can, have, and will face. Even when were children. It shows humanity's ugliness and the beauty it could have if only we would come together.

I feel so bad for moss, poor baby. I was freaking out in the actual chills. Be not afraid, it was literally foreshadowing

How can something be absolutely heart-shattering and optimistic at the same time??

Beautiful portrayals of Autistic, Neurodivergent, Disabled, Queer, and Non-binary people. No one being singled out for any of the above, disability being accommodated naturally, and queerness is normalized.

The idea of "monsters" is a great way to convey dangerous traits and is probably an easier way for kids to understand how racism, ablism, pedophilia can curdle and consume when not addressed. I absolutely loved Jam's pushback of eradicating monsters- in an age of purity politics, we absolutely need revision! True justice over prosecution, and the elimination of the prison industrial-complex. Big big topics scaled to be digestible for adults and kids alike. I am just so impressed.

Mentions and allusions to pedophilia and violence against children, but none really depicted or described. Gaslighting referring to adults not believing a monster is again present.

All I had going in was the title and a recommendation. This book both chilled and warmed my heart. The writing felt a lot like A Wrinkle in Time. The story dealt with some very difficult subject matter but in a way that felt easy for kids and adults to understand. And I appreciated the black, trans main character, non-binary character, and polyamorous parents.
