Pet is a fast-paced character driven novel set in the city of Lucille. The story relies heavily on shifts in Jam’s relationships, introspection in light of those changes, and a curiousness about history that leads to knowledge with great emotional weight. Emezi’s lyrical flow within the prose truly makes this book for me. They use the style in ways that retrieve empathy for readers to hold while getting to know these characters. I can’t get enough of the complicated history of Lucille & the way Emezi explores it.

Good book! Like nothing I’ve ever read. Took me a little effort to get into it, which is saying something because it’s so short, but then it moved very fast. The language was very unique/poetic which was cool, but that also kinda slowed me down.

As an LGBTQ disabled woman, I always appreciate diversity in books. But here, it felt like every single character had to have at least one disability, mental disorder, or less common sexuality or other status that just felt so forced.  Also, I really didn't understand the world here and I feel like this book would have benefitted from actually being a normal novel length. What is with all of the weird names? Why are the thoughts/writing so incongruous with the dialogue? Why is Jam partially mute? I have so many questions that were never answered. Maybe I was just too stupid to understand this book or what I'm sure are many metaphors hiding beneath it's surface, but it simply felt like a story about a supposedly perfect society with a hidden "monster", which is honestly overdone at this point. Read Omelas if you want that kind of vibe, also a short story but hit a lot harder (for me). There are absolutely audiences out there that will enjoy this, it just didn't happen to be me.

In the beginning I felt like I was reading a children’s book, but I just knew I had to be in a metaphor so I powered through. At the halfway mark, it started to come together - while heartbreaking and triggering at the end I still would say it was okay at best. Trigger warning of child abuse and assault. Appreciated the representation in the book - main character is a trans girl, all characters are black, best friend comes from a three parent household (polyamorous) and one parent identifies as they/them. Some of those identities flowed so naturally in the book I almost didn’t even catch the three parent household detail.

This might be my new favorite book. Such a unique voice, incorporation of diversity without tokenization, and simple but powerful symbolism. Obsessed.
