this was an artful exploration into what happens when a society claims there is no evil and then is not able to confront or recognize anything bad within their midst. Jam is a wonderful main character who is curious, has a desire to see justice, and also just a teenager navigating right and wrong with an unexpected companion from another world, Pet.

Oh my GOD!!!! I was obsessed by page 16, when I stopped and had to collect myself because I knew this was going to be good. Leave it to Akwaeke Emezi to absolutely knock it out of the park in another different genre. With this being a YA novel, I am thinking about how impactful this would have been for me when I was growing up, when I was developing my understanding of justice and didn’t have all the words for it yet.
