Jesus Freaks: Stories of Those Who Stood for Jesus, the Ultimate Jesus Freaks
The Voice of the Martyrs, DC Talk
I read this book when I was very young. I recall it being something very heart wrenching. With tears all threw this book of Christian martyrs. It is not likely to appeal to someone who is not a follower of Christ, however it can show how someone's faith can be more powerful then anything this world has to destroy it. Theses stores are short and will help those grow in their faith and feel more pleased with the life they have.
Jesus Freaks: Stories of Those Who Stood for Jesus, the Ultimate Jesus Freaks (Jesus Freaks, #1) by D.C. Talk -- Very moving! Happy Reading!
A lovely idea. This book seeks to tell the oft unknown stories of martyrs of both the ancient and the modern age. It protrays them with a respect and accuracy that is touching, however is so weakly written as to never quite accomplish the heart-wrenching catharsis which these stories merit.
This book is full of lies designed to frighten children into believing in a god that demands human sacrifice and martyrdom. That is all.
SO GREAT!!! I read aloud a few of these most mornings for the past few months. It strengthened our faith so much! I highly recommend reading this. I'm sure we'll reread it again in a couple of years!
The writing isn't brilliant or professional, and the research/ documentation seems spotty and occasionally suspect, but many of the stories are still powerful. It's amazing to see and hear what people throughout history and into the present have been willing to endure for the sake of their love for Jesus. They deserve the title Jesus Freaks, and I am blessed to follow in their faith tradition, if not in their sacrifices. I appreciated that the stories covered a range of historical eras, into the present, as well as a wide range of geo-political settings and ethnicities.
I think reading this book should be a good reminder to American Christians of what persecution against the church really looks like, and also how badly wrong things tend to go when religions, Christian or otherwise, get political power. The stories set throughout the UK, with "Christians" killing Christians, were an especially good reminder. We don't need power other than the power of our faith, as it's not our job to seek a political kingdom. It's just our job to live faithful to our calling, whatever price that may entail, until our time on Earth is through.
I appreciated the bibliography and recommended reading at the back of the book, even if it did seem spotty and perhaps inadequate as historical resources, and lacking in specific citations within the stories. And I also appreciated the resources provided by VOM about the modern day persecuted church. But this book was printed in 1999, and most of the material is badly out of date, especially politically. And comments about something happening "last year" are bound to go out of date extremely quickly.
Even so, I'll probably read the other Jesus Freaks books. The stories are short and easy to read, so they are great for a daily devotional, as well as a great reminder of the value of our faith. I also intend to do further research, hopefully with some legitimate sources, on the same topic. Foxe's Book of Martyrs, here I come.
