Loved settling into the emotions of Sappho that have transcended time. The fragmented approach Anne Carson presents is so respectful of both Sappho and her reader, allowing us to feel our own way through.
illuminating introduction, helpful end notes, and gorgeously translated fragments (no i don’t know ancient greek). i’ve plenty of marked phrases to return to and memorise!

2nd read: I moved it up from 4 stars to 5. I remember when I first read it, I was super confused. The phrasing seemed strange to me and the fragments were super short that I didn't know what to do with them. I am SUPER glad I had to read this again for class, because I now love it. I love how I can look to the Greek and check how Carson translated certain words. I also love that, now that I know some Ancient Greek, I understand the phrasing of the fragments a lot more. Other translations try to modernise the phrasing to make it more understandable for the average reader. However, Carson keeps it very close to the original Greek syntax and I LOVED IT. I bookmarked so many fragments and I will definitely reread.

Very aware of its own translated nature (and treating it as a jumping point for further opportunities in artistic expression). Moving, with some fragments being haunting, even. Worth reading, and Anne Carson is as luminary as ever.
