The Christmas Guest

Fun but nothing special

It took me entirely too long to get through this 100-page book. I think a big problem for me was the lack of chapters. It's part 1 and part 2. Part 1 ran on forever, maybe 60 to 70 pages or so, with no breaks and no chapters.😭

Part 1 is told through diary entries of an American student spending her Christmas break with the family of a girl she met a school in London. The friend, Emma's home, is a manor in the English countryside.  The diary is filled with long rambling entries of Ashley's stay with the family in detail with very little excitement to propel me through the pages.

Part 2 does pick up.  The twist got me. It was the one thing that was very well done. I think I would recommend this book although I usually wouldn't for books that are less than 3 stars. It's a mindless Christmas thriller that can help you get to your reading goal at the end of the year, and it's free on Kindle Unlimited.

Fun little mystery novella. I missed the holiday season by about a month, but it was still fun. Loved the reading of the old diary aspect.

3.5

Was this revolutionary? No. But I love a good Christmas book. This is actually a 4 star read but I listened via audio and I felt the audiobook could have been better.

"Friends and family gathered together in country houses with snow piling up outside. Lots of drinking and resentment. Perfect recipe for a murder."

Überzeugend geschrieben, mit überraschendem Twist. Nur die leichte Horror-Anmutung hätte es für mich nicht gebraucht. Angenehm kurz :-)

Ghostly, twisted, and festive.

An enjoyable holiday read. I tend to like all of Peter Swansons books. This one was a good length, good character development considering it’s a novella, a nice twist and a solid ending. What’s not to enjoy? The man can tell a story.

This was such a quick read, I've finished it in one sitting. The joy of a novella

It just didn't grab me enough sadly... not twisty enough for me
