Easily to say, I was definitely not a fan of this book. I will admit this was hard to get through, but I am not the type to DNF a book. Ultimately I did read all of this and just did not really like it. For me, it was a two star review based solely on the way the story flowed.
Before starting this read, I did read the blurb for the book and whether I misunderstood it or the story was different I’m not sure, but I feel like what I read for the blurb didn’t match up for the actual story. I was expecting a more historical story. While this book was set in the past, I still felt that it didn’t flow properly to the era.
The things I didn’t like were how fast the book flew through. To me, the timeline felt rushed. It was almost like there wasn’t enough detail to fully explain the story to the reader. I also was against some of the wording used for certain characters and scenes. The way the wording portrayed to me was derogatory and gave off an unappealing sense of wanting to be read. I understand that times were different in the past, but I felt there could’ve been a better way to portray that than how it was written. I also did not like it being in third person. I felt with this being in third person it didn’t give enough details or insights into the characters.
The thing I did like was that all the characters felt different from each other. There weren’t times where I had to question who was the current character. I did enjoy getting the chance to read something different from what I am used to reading.
I appreciate the author trying their best to put out material that they felt was worthy. However, this book was just not for me and I do not feel comfortable with telling others to read it.
The stereotypes in this book were awful. I get it’s supposed to be during the civil era but there are much better ways to depict it. I just couldn’t get further with it.

The end of this book had a lot of typos and the quiet felt out of place and it felt like the without turned to end the story and very sloppily filled all the remaining plot holes. Overall the story had potential, but I found myself constantly wondering where the progression of the FMC was headed and felt like I was always missing something.

This book was completely out of the norm for me. It is based in a time where racism was rampant and “martial law was declared in South Carolina.” Vanessa who is a light skinned black girl finds herself in a dilemma when her first child was diagnosed with Sickle Cell. This normally wouldn’t be a surprise BUT to Vanessa’s husband surprise she has been passing a white woman after she got her hands on a deceased white baby’s birth certificate. After finding out that his wife is not only black but his son is black as well, he hatches a plan to get rid of them and get his revenge.
It started out okay. The concept is good and I liked the storyline. It quickly started moving like the author was rushing, didn't want to keep writing it. That quickly changed to what felt more like an outline for a book rather than well thought out paragraphs and chapters. By the time I hit the half-way point, I didn't know who was talking or being talked about and it just felt like it had gone off the rails and lost the storyline completely. I just couldn't go on. I hate not finishing a book... I might go back to it, but probably not.
