Funny and irreverent, Texts From Jane Eyre is fan fiction at its very best. Imagine screenshots of texts written by famous literary characters and authors and you've got the gist of this book. If I wasn't familiar with the characters writing the texts, I'd do a quick google search for the books to have a very basic point of reference. That was highly enjoyable for me---I feel like I've got a broader (although still quite shallow) understanding of literature than before I picked the book up.

Fun and smart - not every section hit equally hard but overall very funny and enjoyable.

Funny and smart - Mallory Ortberg knows her stuff! The Emily Dickinson and Wuthering Heights chapters were my favorites.

I will never not scream "IS IT BECAUSE OF MY ATTIC WIFE" during a discussion of Jane Eyre thanks to this book.

I wanted to like this, I expected to like it (just as many others apparently have), but it fell very flat for me. Part of it may be from my lack of familiarity with the characters and authors that Ortberg references in the text. The ones I did recall were also not so funny to me, however. Part of it may be that it's just one of those books you need to be in a certain mood to enjoy, and that mood passed me by. Whichever the case, this just was not for me.
