DNF. I tried. The prose isn't actually that bad but the subject matter is so so boring. Fights in space. Fights on planets. Faux Latin bollocks. Mary Sue god-protagonist.

Cast into the charity shop from whence it came.

Robotic Gorillamaine is PMP forced to live as a warlord. He would’ve loved the Excel World Championship.

Like with a lot of modern media tie in novels, this book was much better than I think anyone could (or would) ask for. There’s a little more exposition than I usually like, but based on reviews for the sequels, it seems like it’s in service of a larger, better story, so I’m looking forward to seeing what’s to come.

I LOVED this.
Not only is it one of the only Warhammer books where I really enjoyed the fighting scenes but also the characters are so well written that I actually LIKED GILLIMAN???? I cannot believe this.
Also there is a group of Unnumbered Sons that has a couple POV chapters and I loved all of them aswell? PRIMARIS MARINES? (This one especially goes out to my pup Bjarni Arvisson and the Trixie Mattel-ass horrible Swedish accent that the audiobook narrator gave him.)

But even more than that I am in love with Haley‘s writing of anything and everything Nurgle.
I‘m not joking, the author absolutely ate with these simultaneously disgusting but somehow beautiful and serene descriptions. The wonderful humor, that shines through even the smallest details like the choice of words but layered with sadness, not only in the portrayal of characters like Ku‘gath and my darling Mortarion and their struggle to accept themselves but also in the little hints at the inherent mournfulness of a life lived in a constant state of active death (or the other way around: continuous death experienced without ever losing one’s life).

Even I, a certified sicko, had to wonder if more details of decay and illness would make me in return feel sick if it went on longer but it never came to it, luckily.

Though if you have ANY issues with gore, insects, parasites, severe decay, illness, faeces, fungal infestation, body horror, eye horror any kind of description of bodily functions or anything unclean you should generally stay away from Nurgle content but from the Plague Wars especially.

Me personally? I am delighted and cannot wait to continue!
Judging from the first instalment I can only believe this series is COOKING like the Godblight.

The Emperor Doesnt Protect

As this book is supposed to kick off a new era for the 40K universe, I'd hoped for it to be told on a bigger canvas. Unfortunately, the book was fairly limited in scope. Dark Imperium was entertainingg, but ultimately disappointing.

I loved this one. Guilliman’s struggles, and the struggles of those around him, are written with an attention to detail that defies the scale of the setting. A thrilling introduction to current WH40k story
