I didn’t find it particularly memorable. Maybe I need to quit sci-fi on audio.

I don't like reading political intrigue and yet this book is so addictive, I adored it and immediately had to have my own copy. Great alternate universe futuristic sci fi world gorgeously described with a ridiculous amount of action at the same time.

But the thing that makes it so special is the use of Mesoamerican empire history and culture as inspiration and it makes me uneasy that The Thing That Makes It Special is something that the author has no ties to at all you know?

It has been a minute since a book made me stay up until 3am bc I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. It’s hard to make a plot which is 90% political maneuvering this engaging from start to finish. The characters were brilliantly written, they felt so much like real people. Mahit was a fantastic MC, she was so clever and resourceful and strong and still such an emotionally authentic person. I am not very well read when it comes to sci-fi but I loved the world and all the little cultural differences. I think I missed a bit of the depths of the poetry and language as a non native English speaker which I’m a bit sad about but I still enjoyed the writing style a lot. It’s even more impressive how engaging the story was since im a slow reader to begin with and the writing slowed me down even more in order not to miss anything. The beginning dragged a tiny bit but this critique is to be taken with a grain of salt bc of aforementioned reasons. The names killed me though. I’m already bad with remembering names and the number/object combinations fried my brain.
I really want to read more sci fi, I have a lot of fun with all these complicated new worlds and themes of identity and humanity.
