“Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction. So when Jesus says “Love your enemies,” he is setting forth a profound and ultimately inescapable admonition. Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies– or else? The chain reaction of evil–hate begetting hate, wars producing wars–must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.”

I am a bit embarrassed that it took me so long to get to this book. First of all the book was published in the 1960’s. So it has been around for fifty plus years. Secondly, I have owned a copy for a couple of years. Lastly, it is only 155 pages. Its size is not intimidating. However, the content is amazing and deserves lots of thought and reflection.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968. We haven’t made much progress since he was taken from us. On every page of this book there are words that apply to our present issues of racial prejudice and inequality. If we would only listen to what MLK has to say we would be better off.

I hope I can continue to hold his values in front of me so I can make the necessary changes in myself.

The last book that moved me the way this book moved me was The Four Agreements. The man can write quite exquisitely. My heart feels more open and of love. The vocabulary in his writings is very engaging. The word I am going to have in my forefront of thought is AGAPE..."The understanding and creative redemptive goodwill for all people."

I read this as part of a forum/discussion group at my church. Minus the references to Communism and this book could be written today; every page resonated. These sermons are both timely and timeless. When will we heed the call to love one another?

Wow! Brilliant!

Martin Luther King Jr. is the closest thing we will ever have to a modern day prophet. He was a genius and well ahead of his era. These 12 sermons are of the times that they were written in but are still very relevant. The sermon on communism was the only one that I was unable to relate to. The rest of the sermons weren't only relatable but refreshing, uplifting, and grounding. I would recommend this book to everyone!

Brilliant, inspiring, and honestly one of the most uplifting and timeless collections of writing I have ever read. Sure, there are a lot of references to Civil Rights that may not translate to current issues, but most of what MLK Jr. has to say is for everyone, for all time. Everyone should read this book and take its lessons to heart.

Everyone should read this. Don’t get turned away by the constant talk of Christianity and being a follower of Jesus. I feel like it is so incredibly important to read this book thinking about the bigger picture. What a great way to get to know how MLK thought on a deeper level than just his most popular speeches. I’m really glad that I ended up purchasing this book, because I already know I’m going to be re-reading this slower and when I feel like I could use some important life reminders. A true eye-opening read.

What a humble, kind, and wise man. Such an uplifting read. I know I'll refer back to it many times.
