I'm trying to get in the habit of writing reviews more, so here goes!
I enjoyed this one quite a bit. I liked the multiple timelines/perspectives, especially Jarret's life with Lexington and how we got to see history unfold from that "present" perspective. Brooks certainly did her research, and the afterword that explained which parts she took creative liberties on and what was factual was very informative! I feel like I learned a lot while reading this book.
Without spoilers, it did take a dark/depressing turn towards the end that, while I believe brought attention to a very real issue, still hurt my heart to see it play out. I believe that's exactly what the author was going for, though, and kudos to her for not shying away from such relevant topics.
My main critique was that the book DID feel heavy-handed at times, particularly when it came to dealing with social justice issues (not just racism/anti Black-ness, but touching on COVID-19 and others as well). Again, important themes that I appreciated the author tackling, but there was not much subtlety in this book at all.
Overall, a 4/5 for me!

Engaging historical fiction. I now know more about caring for thoroughbred horses than I ever cared to before.

Really enjoyed this book! I listened to the audiobook and all the voice actors did such a good job! Loved the way the plot moved from past to present, and how new information was revealed because of that.
Took a while to get into it. The author really did her research and I enjoyed the afterword on the historical aspects a lot.

A stunning, emotional story about race and race horses. I loved the overlapping storylines, and cared about each character and their timeline very much. A beautiful, devastating picture of how dangerous America is and has always been for Black people.

A super book
What a great book! I love the story woven together across time and place, so well done. The audio book readers were great too and added a nice dimension to the story telling.
