I liked that this book was about more than a creature seeking out children. Daka Hermon entwined frienship, grief, community, and facing fears into the story. Those themes made the novel more interesting and enjoyable.

Justin has recently lost his mom to cancer and one of his best friends that helped him through it, Zee, has also disappeared.
One day Zee just shows up after a year missing, and while he’s back, he isn’t the same, he’s different and reciting strange rhymes about the Seeker. Soon Justin and his friends find themselves a part of a deadly game of hide and seek with this malevolent entity called The Seeker. Together the friends need to come together to defeat this terrifying evil and return home.
I loved the strong messages in this book about grief, moving forward, and learning that facing what scares us, doesn’t have to be something we do alone. The characters are diverse and the relationships in this novel really do catch the feeling of a positive, supportive, and powerful friendship. This was a fun read with a great message, cute characters, and overall just leaves you with those cozy spooky vibes that I love. Hide and Seeker is not scary (it’s middle grade) but it is creative, creepy, and a nice break from adult horror!
