i really liked iwtv & tvl but boy, have i got so many issues with this book. that's why it took me ages to finish this book. the frequent pov changes truly whipped me. and the writing style looked completely different from the other books as well, to me. it felt like there wasn't any coherence to the story, just random fragments tied together messily. pretty unfortunate, as i did like the previous books.

The first half of the book was absolutely amazing, probably my favorite part of the whole series so far. I definitely started losing steam after that when it got to the main conflict, which in the end felt a bit anticlimactic, but that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it.
This book is definitely worth a read, namely for the new characters and the lore. I would have picked it up for Claudia’s presence alone, short lived as it was. (I still hold out hope that she’ll be relevant as the series goes on.)

The first half of QOTD is sort of boring, wildly confusing, and slow at times. The second half is some of the most intriguing and interesting stuff I’ve read in my whole life. I find myself missing characters like Louis and Daniel who, for the most part (save Devil’s Minion), are background characters and accessories to their counterparts, but that’s made up for tenfold by Maharet, Mekare, and Khayman’s appearances. Incredible cast of characters that makes it easier to look over parts of the plot I wasn’t so thrilled by.

Definitely not what I expected from this at all.. Started off super invested in all of it but then I'd say from The Story of the Twins, my interest kinda petered out and the story felt a bit too overly long for me. Having said that my favourite parts were definitely the epilogue and the Devil's Minion chapter. I also really liked Jesse's POVs, it was refreshing to read from a grounded human character separate from the vampire universe (plus finally a female POV) and I ended up being a lot more interested in the Talamasca than I thought I would be (although I still don't really get why AMC are giving them a spinoff show). I hate to say it but the biggest let down for me was Akasha as the central villain, there was such a huge build-up to her character and she was introduced as such a cool and mysterious villain, then it turns out that her main motivation is just that she's a femcel?? Unexpected and underwhelming, and her defeat was a bit anticlimactic for me as well. I'd still recommend as I really enjoyed the parts with the existing characters from the previous two books but overall I think Rice's ideas behind this were simultaneously overambitious and underbaked, and there was a bit too much jumping around between plot lines which ultimately impacted my interest until the ending.
she has such a special way of repeating herself a million goddamn times
