Rediscovering Anne Rice. It’s been 29 years since I last read her work and it’s as captivating as it always was.
This book is strongest when it is purely a worldbuilding almost anthology, and weakest when it comes to actual plot. Luckily most of the actual plot is in Lestat POV, which makes it more entertaining. If you go into this with the understanding that the actual plot of "vampires go to a concert and then sit in a room in Sonoma" is largely just a frame for character studies, lore, and some good horror scenes, you'll have a good time.
Obviously as an almost-anthology some sections are stronger than others- I definitely enjoyed the chapters that were more focused on building a character or a piece of the world than explaining the specific origins of the vampires, but I could see other people having the opposite opinion. For my interests the first half far outshines the second half.
A solid step down from the high of The Vampire Lestat, but not really a stumble.

Look, don't read Anne Rice if you're not intelligent enough to grasp a character-driven framework or understand her continual themes about morality and the search for meaning.
