I just have a weird attachment to this little book. A small masterpiece.

Thoroughly recommend Miriam Margolyes' narration of this classic novel, don't think I would have got through it otherwise. Margolyes made the humour really stand out and added depth that I wouldn't have got from the page as I think the novel has dated since 1961.

Miss Brodie is an unconventional teacher of a group of girls in an elementary school. She is very firm in her beliefs about education, and focuses heavily on the arts. Her methods cause school administration to look at her unfavorably and conspire to remove her from her position. Over the years, her pupils become her disciples, until one of them betrays her.
I was so sure I was going to love this book. I’m a teacher; I have a deep love for Scotland and especially for Edinburgh; I am obsessed with Maggie Smith (who plays the titular character in the film adaptation). But this was so disappointing. I found it to be extremely bland, and the jumps in time didn’t quite work for me. Boring, repetitive, confusing; how did this garner so much praise? So sad that I couldn’t appreciate it as I’d expected.
