In a backwater Earth town, Rei Ettowa dreams of traveling across the stars to destroy Infiernen -- the man who murdered her brother. Unable to let go of her brother’s murder, Rei hunts Infiernen. But instead of killing him, Rei discovers a terrible secret about her brother.

But there's more to the story than a girl seeking vengeance for her brother's death. Rei meets a group of men and women fighting for the Federation against the evil forces of Dominion and learns a startling truth about herself. She is the God Queen reincarnated. Now she has to find a way to keep her identity from the public while also seeking justice for her brother's death. That is until she realizes her identity is exactly what could help her find the truth and get to Infiernen.

Rei gathers the other reincarnated gods and aligns them with her own goals -- vengeance, justice, and the end to the Dominion once and for all.

What I liked:

The concept that someone could be a reincarnated god with latent powers appeals to me, probably for obvious reasons to anyone who knows me (I like superpowers, especially done well). I also liked that these powers were not infallible. Each of the gods had a weakness that could be exploited. In some cases, the weakness causes each of the gods their own fears. The characters were diverse and unique. The worldbuilding (or galaxy building, in this case) was fantastic. I could see each planet as its own entity and different in its own way.

What I didn't like:

There are a few things about this book that felt off. First and foremost, this is a romance above everything else in the book. Every single chapter from the moment Rei meets Bronx either mentions attraction or fear of hurting the other person with their power or an overwhelming desire. It felt a lot like a story about these two, with other plot elements in the background. Now, there's nothing wrong with that, but I believe that readers should enter this book with their eyes open. Expect a lot of romantic tension between these two. It often trumps other plot elements. The other sci-fi elements of this story are great, and it's an enjoyable read, for certain, but not quite what I was expecting.

Tishner uses a lot of smiles and laughs for a group of people who have a lot going on and so much to lose. They are a pretty happy, easygoing bunch. Just about every chapter has someone smiling at someone else (sometimes more than once) or laughing. I guess I just wanted more tension and uncertainty and less happiness. Perhaps that's a fault of my own.

To anyone who believes this is a YA novel: it isn't. The themes are very adult, including quite a bit of on-point sexuality and crass language. Again, I don't mind these things in books, but this book had a lot of crass language that some people may not deem appropriate. All of the characters felt much older than young adult, including Rei. That doesn't make this a bad book at all. I still enjoyed it. But again, I feel readers should go into this with a clear understanding of what they are getting, and I feel this book may be incorrectly marketed. It's more New Adult Sci-Fi Space Romance, IMHO.

Overall

With all of that said, I do want to be clear. This was a great book. I enjoyed it a lot and read through it pretty quickly. The pacing was a touch slow-burn for me. The God Queen is a great book about self-discovery and acceptance of who you are set in a well-thought-out universe.

Do I recommend this book? Yes. Just enter it with your eyes open about what you are truly getting.

What I Did Like:
-The cover.
-Bronx’s inner struggle is well written. I’d read another book in this series again for that alone. It’s realistic and wonderful.
-The concept of reincarnated Gods is fun. The idea of being inside a main character who is learning that she is that reincarnated God is great. There’s a lot of potential in this concept for future books.
-The book sets up this series well, getting you interested enough to keep reading.

Who Should Read This One:
-Epic space fans
-Fans of reluctant hero stories
-If you like stories about people learning to use their powers.

My Rating: 4 stars. The book delivers on character and unique situations.

Thanks to M.L. Tishner for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When seeing the cover and blurb for this book, I was so excited to read this. This book was fun and overall pretty good! I do think, that since I have so many books on my TBR, I won't be continuing this series, and I will explain in my review why!

This book has some of the best described action scenes I have ever read. I had so much fun reading them; the sparring, the practicing, the fighting. I think Tishner did a really good job on the cast of characters, plot and story. Sometimes I felt like things could've been taken a bit slower, or things could've been described better. Maybe if the story wasn't as fast paced as it was, it would've been 4 stars for me. Overall definitely a science fiction series that I think a lot of people would enjoy.

M.L. Tishner's debut novel, The God Queen, is not one I'm going to be forgetting anytime soon. It's a science fiction novel like no other. And let us not forget that vibrant cover! I honestly think that the combination of pink and purple hues made me stop and read the description for this book in the first place. I'm not ashamed to admit that.

Rei Ettowa may be trapped in a tiny town on Earth, but she dreams of something more. She dreams of finding her way to the stars and hunting down the knight who brutally took her brother away from her.

Then Rei learns that she is more than she had ever dared to dream, as she is the reincarnated form of The God Queen. While this brings with it immense power, it also brings great danger. It is up to Rei to find that balance and save the day.

“She wanted to cleanse the world in fire.”

The God Queen is arguably one of the more unique science fiction novels I've read, even in recent times. For one thing, my brain keeps thinking it is a fantasy (I blame the cover there), and yet I'm totally okay with that.

What really made me want to read this book was how strong Rei sounded. That and the fact that she's apparently The God Queen. It made her sound so strong and powerful, and I simply had to know more. Let me tell you; I was not disappointed. Rei is everything that I had hoped for, and perhaps more.

“Desperate people believe the lie because they want it to be true, and it distracts them from their own problems.”

Also, it was SO hard limiting myself to only a couple of pull quotes for my review. There are so many good quotes in The God Queen, and I feel like that fact alone should speak volumes about this beauty.

I was absolutely enchanted with this story and the hundreds of details that flowed across the pages. Before I knew it, the book was over, and I was left running to the computer for news on the sequel (good news on that front!).

Thanks to Xpresso Book Tours for making this book available for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Interesting story

Tishner pens a grand story in The God Queen. This is the first book I've read that was considered a Space Opera, and I enjoyed reading it. It wasn't quite like a fantasy or sci-fi book on its own, but it seemed like a mix of genres. This writing style and story style is a credit to the author's writing, and this futuristic world was built. This reader found the story easy to read, a lot of detail was put into the story, and the pace was pretty well solid. It is more than just a fight for survival, but the journey to find hope as well. The characters were pretty well developed, and I did like the story. It was a long read, but I think that fit with this story. I look forward to reading more by this author.
