Each story is given a little background before launching into the stories themselves.

Excellent book.

2017 review:  I attempted to enjoy this book, as I had to read it for a course at uni. However, it is really random at times, especially in terms of narration and characters, which makes it hard to follow. Most of the time I was quite bored, there's no feelings in it, it is very matter of fact. I'm happy I read it, as I can now see what kind of things it influenced. But it's not an easy read.

One of the most unfortunate translations I've ever had to read holy shit. The expository info in the introduction was pretty interesting, but I should've just gotten the Davies.
