I'm really enjoying the writing and detail of these classic mysteries. Beware though that they were written in a time when attitudes about women, gender, and sexual violence were different, perhaps "antiquated" (though maybe not as different as we wish they were). Maybe start with another in the series and save this for later.
Graphic: Blood, Alcohol, Death, and Rape
Minor: Infidelity
The attitudes about rape refected in a portion of the story may be a shock to readers not living in the 1960s-70s when this book took place and was written.kanejim57's review against another edition

Being a fan of the Inspector Morse and Endeavor TV series, I decided to listen to books upon which the series were based. I was not disappointed. As I listened, I expected to hear John Thaw and Kevin Whately's voices coming through my ear buds! I am continuing to listen to all of Dexter's books in order of publishing.

A great beginning to a stellar series. It's interesting to read Morse and Lewis meet for the first time and see their partnership develop over the course of a case. I felt bad for Morse's love life at the end - poor Chief Inspector!

Solid police procedural puzzle mystery that just hints at how much better the later Morse novels will get.
