"Hamlet," the timeless masterpiece by William Shakespeare, finds a new voice in this edition edited by Jonathan Bate and Eric Rasmussen. Their unique approach brings compassion and depth to the characters and themes of this iconic play.

As a literary classic, "Hamlet" needs no introduction. What makes this edition stand out is the compassionate lens through which Bate and Rasmussen explore the characters. Prince Hamlet's inner turmoil, his philosophical musings, and his journey through grief and vengeance are all brought vividly to life. The editors provide insightful annotations and explanations that make Shakespeare's language more accessible to modern readers, which is a significant achievement.

What truly sets this edition apart is its compassionate treatment of every character. Ophelia, Claudius, Gertrude, and others are given a depth rarely seen in other versions. The editors shed light on the motivations and complexities that drive these characters, allowing us to empathize with their choices, even when they are morally ambiguous.

This edition encourages readers to explore the shades of gray in human nature. It prompts us to question not only the characters' actions but also our own capacity for good and evil. The editors' commentary serves as a compassionate guide through the emotional terrain of "Hamlet."

However, I'm withholding the fifth star due to a personal preference for a more concise annotation style. Some readers may find the extensive commentary enriching, while others might prefer a more streamlined reading experience.

In conclusion, "Hamlet" edited by Jonathan Bate and Eric Rasmussen is a compassionate and thought-provoking edition of a literary classic. It's a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Shakespeare's work and the complexities of human nature. With its unique approach, this edition breathes new life into a timeless tale, making it accessible and relevant for contemporary readers. A solid 4-star addition to any bookshelf.

To be or not to be.... after reading the dreadful If We Were Villains I decided to park Shakespeare indefinitely... well I declare that personal embargo over. What's not to enjoy about this one? Has a ghost, a duel, songs and murder lol
