for such a hyped book I felt very underwhelmed. there were some chapters that had me hooked and there was an interesting storyline but the pointless details and side characters just took any remaining allure from me tbh

I stayed up all night reading it. It flows and reels you in. The plot is a little mechanical. Of the two main characters, one is quite fascinating, the other - strangely shallow. This financial journalist made me quite mad when he says, in an interview, that since stock exchange does not represent true economy, its crash only affects a few rich speculators. However unreal are the equations of financial markets, however imaginary the math, when it goes haywire, it seems that common folk suffer too.
In another book I read recently, Assaf Gavron's Almost Dead, the protagonist during an interview is also shown sprouting dead phrases about some pretty big issues. It's kinda sad, but maybe true, and maybe that's the point: one can inadvertently get involved in a world-historical drama,
without this involvement yet in any way increasing critical awareness of the situation. The events are bigger than any one's ability to analyze them, perhaps (sometimes?) especially to the degree that one is actually involved in them.

oh my god I"m going to puke.

I was so annoyed by this book. I don't think I can even explain it, but it made me inclined to hate men. (ok, that's a little extreme, but not entirely off) - not just the serial killers, but the "good" ones who are turned on by women half their age who look like they are both anorexic and younger than their daughters. AND think they're feminists, apparently because they don't approve of rape and serial killing. seriously, thanks, guys.

A page turner - so good!

I can’t believe I even finished this book. I kept thinking it had to get better but it truly never did. SO SLOW AND BORING

I finished this late last night, so I figured I’d finally come and write my opinions once I’m a bit more awake.

First and foremost, regarding the authors passing, I do think it’s a shame how popular this book has become, especially considering it only received such praise after he was gone. Secondly, I do give credit for how well he developed characters and helped you understand their point of view. I will critique though, that his writing was far too meticulous about certain things and what the character was doing. “Blomkvist went to the coffee shop and grabbed a sandwich, read the newspaper” was perhaps written too many times to actually count.

But, whilst the writing did not please me as much, it was a great story to read. I liked this a lot, but it definitely delved quite deep into rape and sexual assault and abuse more than I had expected. It spoke of sexism and misogyny, homicide of many women. Nazism and political views….discrimination toward Jewish belief. Definitely one of those books that would not be everyone’s cup of tea, because unfortunately, I do find that a lot of topics that Larsson had written about were too close to reality than we’d hope. I do think this was on purpose to shine light on the crimes women go through, especially in countries like Sweden.

I’ll consider reading the other books in his series, and I’m really excited to watch the movie. Boring writing, but a great concept.
