I love this book more everytime I read it, maybe just because of my nostalgia and my attachment to whatever the hell Victor and Eli have going on. Aside from that, Schwab's prose is lovely and so genuinely enjoyable to read. It's fun seeing how everything comes together (and what doesn't, for some characters) in the end - even on a reread. I love Sydney. This is my first time reading the extra story that was in my edition and I really enjoyed it! My favourite book forever. Now I will Finally read the sequel after 5 years.

A very competently written book, it just never gave me that thing that a great book has. It kept me wanting to know what happens but I wasn’t hungry for it. And it all felt a bit flat and predictable.

I sincerely don’t know what to rate this book. I enjoyed it but some parts really stretched my suspension of disbelief, and not even the powers stuff. Like reanimating people after they are buried and their eyes snap open. Wouldn’t they be all glued and stuffed by a mortician? And the 13 yo was rather precocious. They’d say or think or do something and I’d think “at 13 years old?!” I also didn’t really get why the sister bought in to Eli’s fanaticism. And how little she had played with her powers despite using them constantly and being tormented by that. She could have done some really wild shit with her power. However, I liked the morally grey character of Vincent and his associates, including the precocious child (with the eyes that needed to be described over and over again). I think I’d listen to the sequel if it came in as a library hold but I wouldn’t be in a huge rush for it.
