A brief vision into civilian life at the dawn of WWII in Italy that is both whimsical and troubling all the same. I will say, I wholeheartedly respect the characters’ undying quest to simply fuck around.

Interesting, but too short to really mean anything to me.

Calvino's writing is relatively straightforward yet descriptive enough to make me feel like an Italian youth during the war. At the same time, nothing is particularly interesting enough to captivate me, and I wish it were longer so I could spend more time trying to understand Calvino's life at the time.

The narrator, essentially Calvino, is worth examining, and the people around our narrator are also somewhat interesting, but I just wish there was more.

Good night scenes, though.

I should disclose: everything from Calvino is a delight. This just isn’t my favorite of his very impressive roaster. I do have to highlight that I LOVED “UPA Nights”!

"To recover from them I would turn, with the fickleness of inclination to the young, to cynicism: I would go out, meet friends I could trust, and I was calm, clear, sneering - 'Hey have you heard the latest?' - and the things that had in private seemed to torment me became quips, retorts full of paradoxical bravado, to be said with a wink, with a brief laugh, almost with approval and admiration for these exploits."

We are all too young for war
