This book is short, but it still takes its time to introduce us to Ged to help us understand him and see how a great wizard gets his start. We follow his journey from boyhood to early manhood, from foolish youth to a man who understands the error of his ways and what must be done to face the consequences of our actions. I liked the pace of the book. The edition that I have has an afterword from the author, where she says that there are no wars in Earthsea; people are tested by themselves and by the world to be better. And you feel that in this book. Ged is tested by his own hubris to overcome or to perish. I see Earthsea not as a text to consume, but as a world to live in and I want to follow more. Explore more. Be an adventurer in my own right.

I'm more accustomed to reading contemporary works, so the page-long paragraphs were a bit daunting at first.

It's narrated as a biography of the great wizard Sparrowhawk. It has a distant feeling as if you were looking at the events through a veil. I enjoyed it regardless, the characters' motivations felt genuine, and I noticed homoromantic undertones in the interactions between the protagonist and his best friend.

There's a reason this one is a classic.
