The deduction style is very Sherlock Holmes -ish. The tale is a gory one, too. I certainly did not expect a culprit as exotic as this. The story was short - that was a bonus. But the style of writing was very strange, almost boring. Nonetheless, I’m glad I read this one. Definitely a must read.

Read for Uni, definitely should have read it sooner. Widely identified as the first detective story.

I remember reading this in high school during my detective reading days, and then completely forgot about it. Flash forward to today and I wanted a quick audio book so picked this one. If you like the very detailed description of crime events as in Sherlock Holmes you’ll like this. It has the craziest ending in any murder mystery I’ve ever read. I wish I could have read this back when it was published cause man I wouldn’t have shut up about it. It’s clearly the beginning of the detective genre but it is enjoyable, especially if you like Victorian detectives and their literary descendants.
