Solid twist! Slow start for a short story. Too much philosophizing about philosophy.

The character that serves as the inspiration for many a famous detectives to come, like the most iconic Sherlock Holmes himself. And the inspirations are clear, even to the choice of narrator.

oh this wasn't really my cup of tea

Apparently, Poe’s work here is the first “locked room mystery” created and also the inspiration for future great detectives a’la Sherlock Holmes and Hercules Poirot.

A far fetched scenario and an extremely dry read but nonetheless, interesting in the fact this being the OG.

Historically important! Bit dry at the start, but that can be chalked up to the time period. Honestly bonkers ending tho

Would I recommend? Eh. But I’ll certainly be retelling it to make people be surprised at the end

The first modern detective story is honestly kind of a mess despite Poe's innovation. Auguste Dupin is certainly as intelligent as future detectives and there are some intriguing twists but the story is rough and the ending absurd to the point of undermining the journey. That said, it's historically significant and certainly competent as Poe is still Poe, even if his love for orugantangs is less welcome here than in Hop-Frog.
