Me trying to read this book without rolling my eyes every 2.87 seconds:

I've only read maybe ~30 pages and it's already so full of cliches, stereotypes, horrible characters, mean girls, high school drama etc. I just can't with this.

Had some really good characters. I really got into this book.... It was pretty great!

I picked this book up because all of the students a Elgin are asking for it. The beginning of the book was slow moving and pretty cheesy. Alex and Brittany's story is worth moving past that. After the 4th chapter I couldn't put the book down. Think west side story for today's teens.

Amo este libro. La trama, wow. Si, puede ser típica, el chico malo y todo eso, pero no se, hay algo que me encanta de este. Y Alex, por favor, lo que es dios mio!! Me encanto.

"What's the use in having a reputation if you can't ruin it every now and then?"
"I want to know how to make this girl laugh. I want to know what makes her cry. I want to know what it feels like to have her look at me as if I'm her knight in shining armor."

I had really high expectations for this book. First of all, the reviews here have been consistently positive/ raving and it has been on tons of “best books” lists. Second, I wasn’t able to buy it as an ebook in my country until really recently. The draw of the unobtainable was high. When I did finally get the chance to read it I was expecting a lot…too much as it turns out. While this book was good and an enjoyable YA romance, it didn’t thrill me or emotionally rock me. It was good, but no tears were shed, and there was a distinct lack of giddiness while reading.
On the positive side, Brittany and Alex were great narrators! Each had a unique voice and I was more than happy to spend a few hours in their mind. I liked the inclusion of some Spanish language, as it gave the book a more authentic feel. While the secondary characters were firmly embedded in the “trope-character-zone” they were interesting enough, but only Paco will stand out in my memory by next week. In some ways this book felt a little rushed to me and I wish the timeline was a little longer. In particular, without going into any specifics, I felt the resolution with Brittany and her parents and Alex and his gang membership was glossed over and way under-developed.
So, in conclusion, it was a good read, but not the epic YA romance I was hoping for. I liked Brittney and Alex though, and this book is worth reading for their narrative voices alone. I’m not sure if I’ll pick up the rest of the books in this series…
