I thought that this book was ok... The characters felt underdeveloped and didn't really seem develop with the story. Simone Elkeles's writing felt almost childish at times. There were aspects of the book that didn't seem to make sense. The story for the most part was good. It's not a book I would recommend reading for the plot but if you are looking for a book teen romance novel, this might be the book for you.
Spoiler
There was a sex scene during the book. Now I don't have a problem with sex scenes in books if they are well done. This time it wasn't well done at all. There was almost two chapters devoted to the build up/foreplay and then it was over in like two sentences. It wasn't even a break in chapters/time skip. It was in the middle of a chapter. It just didn't make any sense to me.
The Spanish felt forced, like the author was trying way too hard to make them Mexican. I know sometimes they speak in that English/Spanish mix, but it didn't seem real here.
The romance seemed to develop quite rapidly. Although it is a Romeo/Juliet type story.
I respect the author for not selling out the sex scene and making it graphic. It was done very tastefully.
Overall, I was surprised I liked this as much as I did. It is a good read, but I'm not interested enough in Alex's brothers to continue the series.

Fantastic!!! this is one book that completely exceeded my expectations...i had read really great reviews about this book...but the summary didn't really interest me...i put off reading this book even after having owned it for a long time and it took me completely off guard! i expected a typical "opposites attract" love story and it gave me a completely different story. All in all - a really good read!!!
I loved this book from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down and adored the relationship that began to grow between Alex and Brittany throughout the novel.
Brittany is popular, quiet, and had to keep up her 'act' of perfect. What Brittany was trying to hide was her growing feelings for Alex. When she got paired with Alex, she began to freak out. She thought Alex didn't give a care about her or her grades.
Alex is in a gang and he wasn't one you would want to be fighting against in a one-on-one. He was incredibly rude and hard on the outside but, as his and Brittany's relationship grew, he let down the wall and showed her he really cared for her.
I liked that this book showed how two people can grow just with someone you love. I disliked the fact that this book seemed unrealistic. As much as I would love the fact that this happens in real life, I know better.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a Simone Elkeles book or is looking for a contemporary romance book.

LOVED IT!
I'm a sucker for a good girl/bad boy story, and Simone Elkeles wrote a great story with amazing characters. Loved Alex and Brit relationship, they made me giggle, and smile and even cry. I was so in love with the plot and the characters that i couldn't stop reading it.
I'm kind of sad because the book 2 isn't about them, but still i can't wait to read it.

5 stars. This one turned out to be pretty sweet and lovely. Alex really changed for the better (as I expected he would). :)
Wow, wow wow. I absolutely adored this book! I think I finally found myself another series to lose myself in. In a way a lot of the book felt like the Pushing The Limits series. Girl with secrets and problems + Bad Boy with problems. The way the book was told and how it felt were the same as well. Not sure how to explain better, so I hope this explanation is good enough. :)
We have 2 POVs. One is Britt(any) and the other is Alex. Both have their secrets and their agendas. Brittany, to the world she looks like a gorgeous and perfect spoiled princess, but soon we find out this is just a mask, a way of dealing with life, a life that isn't easy on her. Then we have Alex, a bad boy in a gang, everyone thinks he does drugs, murders and beats anyone messing with him, but we soon find out this is also just a mask and just a way for him to survive his life, which just like Brittany isn't an easy one. Two people, not that much in common, two worlds and they both collided with a bang.
I loved Brittany, ok, that took a bit of a time to get me to love her. She had various things that I didn't like, but I also could see she was a sweet girl who will do anything to help her friends, who does anything to help her big sister who has cerebral palsy (and a slew of other things). She is not afraid to open her mouth and kick some ass. And I can imagine she hides herself behind her mask. I would do the same thing.
I loved her with Alex, and while at first I was doubting their relationship, I soon saw that they were just meant to be together.
I was sad for her that her boyfriend Colin changed so much during the summer. I wish we could have seen him as he was before. Not the perverted asshole that he became after the summer. Though, I guess it was needed. If he was perfect and all that, it would have made it harder to pair her with Alex, to get her to be with Alex.
I loved Brittany at the end, my oh my, she has grown so much. She is hiding less behind the mask and showing more of her real self to people.
Alex, ah Alex. At first I didn't like him, he really was a dick and a bully. But I soon saw another side to him. Of course, I didn't always like him. The whole bet to get into Brittany's pants for example. Or the part were he was thinking of just raping her (when she was drunk). Those were the times that I just wanted to kick Alex in his balls. Seriously, dude, don't make bets like that.
But, even with all this, I knew we weren't seeing all there is to Alex. I knew there was a better Alex under all that façade and I was right. Over the course of the book we meet another Alex, an Alex determined to help his family, to help Brittany. He only joined the gang for protection, and he tries to stay away from anything that is illegal.
Then added, the whole thing with how he reacted and acted around Shelley, Brittany's sister. I just felt like I could cry. I have read enough books and seen things happen in real life. Most people don't accept people who are handicapped, they either ignore them or they are rude/mean. Not Alex. Alex visits the sister, plays games with her, has fun conversations with her and so much more. He really showed a wonderful side there.
Colin, one of the characters I truly disliked. I have no clue how he was before the summer, but hearing Brittany talk about him, we know that he used to be sweet and lovely. For some reason (which we find out later) he turned into a total pervert. Almost pushing Brittany to sex. Without a condom even. Oh yes, he would pull back in time, oh no worries. *rolls eyes*Seriously dude, just no. Luckily Brittany is a strong girl and knows to say no.
The mom, bad parenting anyone? I won't say much, because then the review would explode. Just this: I really hate how she treated Shelley. That is not how you treat someone like that.
There was something I didn't like, and that was that they cheated. Brittany still had a boyfriend, yet she kissed Alex during that time. I won't deduct stars for it, since from what I could remember it was just a 1 time thing.
The other thing I didn't entirely like was the Spanish that was used. I followed a course on Spanish and so I could understand some words, but most just flew past me. Even searching up the words didn't work, because most of the time the dictionary online didn't recognize them. :(
Ah, the ending, I loved it. I was almost crying when things went down, and then got patched again. It was just so sweet, so beautiful and it made me so happy. <3
All in all, I would strongly recommend people read this book. There are some parts that might cause you to put the book away, but try a few more pages, believe me it will get better.

This book was the very first in the young adult contemporary genre that I liked reading. I went through it so quickly and then after reading it I wanted to read it again and again. The story is a bit of a modern take of Grease, Pretty in Pink, and Westside story, with the main characters being a rich girl, and a boy from the wrong side of the tracks.
Simone Eckeles did a good job portraying the gang dynamic to make it feel real to the reader. She also did a good job of making Alex's character seem like the hero instead of having him just as this hard-ass gang member that no one would of liked.
Then with Brittany's character with her having this "everything's perfect" act on the outside, while everything is far from it at home, and with her boyfriend. Throughout the book you see her as this real person instead of what most people of this fake superficial rich girl from the north side. And, other than the difference that you see in Alex and Brittany in the beginning you see how much alike they are as their story goes on.
In the book you get chapters alternating between both Brittany and Alex. Which was good since you get to see if from both of their prospectives and also when they both develop feeling for one another and how they affect each other. I don't think I would of liked it if it was just in Brittany's POV or Alex's POV, because there would be a lot of things that wouldn't be there and where I would of wanted another book just to get any questions I wanted answered.
Overall, Perfect Chemistry was an amazing book. You learn a lot in the book from gangs, and gang violence, and how these two fall in love with everything against them. It's one of those books that I would pick up again and again and get back into this story, and I would recommend this book to that likes anything in this genre.
