Might have been something there, but the plot, the characters and the world building all drowned under thesaurus vomit

3.5 rounded up

There was a lot I liked about this book;

Pros:
- Intriguing world building.
- The idea of a soul ball.
- The mythos is just left if familiar.
- the relationship between the sisters.

And there a lot I didn’t like;

Cons:
- Confusing in far too many places, not the mystery, but in action.
- The FIRST fight scene.... what the heck is going on? Does everyone else know? Are they on 2 legs or 4, as she says both, but thinks the secret is safe.... what the what?
- Why is Gunner protecting her? I’m sure that will come out in book 2, but we get no clue, none, not a whiff. And it feels misplaced.

Overall, it’s interesting, confusing enough to be captivating and unique enough to stand out in my head. Maybe book 2 will rectify the issues.

1.5

This was not exciting at all. The author tossed the word "alpha" around way too much for a character that wasn't an alpha. The ending wasn't an ending at all ("buy the next book to see what happens"). Overall just super disappointing.

Good

It was pretty good but there were a lot of unnecessarily big words that a lot of people wouldn’t understand.

This is a story of Mai Fairchild – fox shifter, sister’s keeper, and bane of the local werewolf pack. In a world where different is dangerous, my sister and I must pretend to be human at all costs. Too bad I just lost the job that lets me live under the radar while putting food on my sister's plate. She came to localty where living cost is come under gang and they try to threatened her but she take them down, when a werewolf helped her.

Enter an enticing werewolf who offers enough cash to upgrade our diets from ramen noodles to salami if I join him on a magical hunt. But can I afford to accept the opportunity when the risk of working closely with every fox shifter's sworn enemy is so great. Th story is thriller and story became exciting when her sister security came to threat and they have to move fast to win against enemies and other magical stuff. Part one end here.

2.5 ⭐️
I really hate Uber Villains that are always one step ahead.
Always able to outthink, outmanoeuvre, and have every resource possible, even when dealing with multiple good guys...
I get wanting to keep the story going, but does it need to be one disaster after another?
It's depressing, aggravating, and illogical!

I don't want to read about the super hero who always wins, is perfect at everything, or has an ally to provide the missing element..
I just want a balanced story, with enough hope to keep you reading, enough successes to make it fun, and enough challenges to make turning the page exciting..

Obviously some do love the Uber Villain, the super genius, the all powerful, all resourceful, creating drama and angst on every page. Making an ass out of the heroes and allies alike...

I own the next 2, so will try to keep going, but suspect I will be speed reading through if this narrative continues.
