It's said that "History isn't written by heroes, it's written by Victors" .. but the truth of the history lies in the the tales of the defeated ones and the truth is humans have been always SAVAGES.

This book low key messed me up because I could see myself in characters as an indigenous person who doesn’t necessarily look it.
Anyways I cried a few times, especially towards the end.

There There is a devastating canvas on which Tommy Orange uses the scars and bruises of the past to weave a story that leaves you feeling bereft.
This book was fantastic, you follow multiple characters as they prepare for a pow wow or happen to find themselves en route for it. Each seeking something different and answers to questions they don’t know how to ask, the characters end up in the same place.
An important read for anyone seeking to understand a cultural perspective they’re not familiar with - and even more important for those who are not.

i’ve never read anything like this and i was engaged the whole time. i audibly gasped when it ended (i was reading on a kindle so didn’t have any sense of how much of the book was left), distraught that there weren’t 100 pages left like i thought. the interconnected stories and multiple perspectives and POVs worked well for me, though i had to do a lot of consulting the character descriptions at the beginning. everyone’s story was rich and compelling and beautiful and so sad. can’t wait to read the companion. i thought some things got lost/disjointed with so many perspectives - even 3-5 fewer might’ve worked better for me and allowed orange to give each more space.
