I couldn't honestly rate this any higher because of how sad it was for me to read. And not, "sad that it hurts SO GOOD." It was just heartbreaking, and I hated reading chapters Emeric and Vanja being absolute messes in their own glorious ways. So while yes, I did think this was necessary for me to get through to get to Holy Terrors, it is probably a set of short stories I wouldn't return to again. Not unless Holy Terrors and beautifully and closes the series with a nice Emeric-bought ribbon specifically tied to Vanja. I JUST NEED THESE BABIES TO BE HAPPY.

Oh the last book is gonna hurt..

This is the hardest to read but WE'RE GETTING EMERIC'S POV 😭😭😭😭

It's hard to watch them hurt. Hurting eachother and how they go along their days.

A free novella where u can read it at ao3, 10 chapters, after book 2 before book 3. Margaret Owen has all my love and support.

Oh and this is a mandatory read before starting Holy Terrors.

🌹BOOK THOUGHTS🌹

The Fallow Year is a collection of ten short stories that take place between the end of Painted Devils and the start of Holy Terrors. I don’t believe you have to read these stories in order to understand Holy Terrors, but since I love all things Little Thieves, I figured I’d pick this up before diving into the final book.

I really liked that the stories alternated between being narrated by Emeric and Vanja. The previous books were only from Vanja’s POV, so it was enjoyable to see how Emeric’s brain worked too. I won’t say much about the plot (that would be very spoilery) except that the stories complimented each other nicely and I felt like they worked almost like a novella told from different POVs.

The final two stories were my favourites and overall I liked some better than others. But what I enjoyed most was that the stories were told with Margaret Owen’s usual brand of cooky humour and emotional gut-punches. I love laughing my way through the pain.

Since this isn’t an actual book, just a file that I downloaded from AO3, I’m not giving it a rating. But if you liked the books and want to know more about the characters, I recommend reading these stories.

I want this to be traditionally published bc it feels almost necessary to truly understand the third book - there’s a whole group of people who never realized this existed
