If I knew more about Russia, about Russian history, I likely would have gotten more out of this novel of a Russia 10 years in the future, but even so it was relentless and bitter and funny and terrifying.

Wow. Those oprichniks really know how to have a good time.

Why is it that so much post-Revolution Russian literature--at least the literature that is widely available in English translation--seems to be satire? Whose proclivities does it speak to?

Great book, a chilling and insightful dystopy of Russia's not so far future. The way in which Sorokin combines the language and conventions of tsar Ivan the Terrible's age with today's reality is brilliant.

Swiftian satire at its finest, I suspect Sorokin was settling some literary scores as well. The House of Ruric has been restored in 2028, The Orthodox Church is now sleeping with the FSB and the result is a compelling dynamo through One Day In The Life (pun intended.) Europe, overwrought with Muslims, is walled of and Mother Rus and ally China engage on the highest levels, altering each other's language and customs to satisfy the bottom line and the approval of the Church Patriarch.

Trigger warnings I wish I knew about before embarking on this: senseless violence, rape, gang rape
