This book was equally as uncomfortable to listen to as it was impossible to put down. The perfect example of how important it is to sit with negative feelings/hard things, if only to understand them and what to do with them. This book dives deep into SA of a young girl by her teacher and the entire journey she goes on during and after and the emotional conflict she has, as well as
her trying to navigate the gaslighting she’s had done to herself by both her abuser, and even herself. What a journey

TW: SA, grooming

What a hard topic to swallow when reading, but it is important to bring to light. I feel as though it does at times discuss the trauma with a sense of nuance, I felt it did drag on.

For almost a month, I have been trying to write a review of this book and I still can't find the right words to sum up all the feelings I encountered while reading it. It still seems like I can't let go of emotions this nor can I get the book out of my memory. Russell does a stellar job at captivating the reader from start to finish.

This book is a detailed insight at the bond between a student and a teacher and how a teacher exploited his influence over a young student. I believe this is not only a significant debut novel, but also an extremely relevant story in our society today.

This was an extremely disturbing read for me. This book deals with the difficult topic of sexual abuse but it is potrayed in such a way that it didn't feel fabricated. It reads as way too real to be classified as fiction.

My Dark Vanessa alternates between the past and present of our protagonist, Vanessa, whose yearning of adulthood, when she's just 15 years old, leads to her developing an affair with her 42 year old magnetic English teacher.

This book deals with the contrasting factors of memory and trauma that have repercussions on Vanessa's life following her to a troubled adulthood. This book raises so many questions about extremely important topics like consent, complicity.

I broke down multiple times while reading this book. To even imagine people going through what the protagonist goes through, the manipulation of the abuser, the mental trauma that's just going to be with you till the day you die, is harrowing.

The sad truth of our world is that these things happen. Abuse take place behind closed doors, in offices, public transport, inside marriages, outside marriages, and on freaking streets in bright daylight. I'm not an expert in this area and don't want to say something stupid, but if you've ever faced any kind of abuse be it sexual or emotional or verbal, Please Please Stay Strong. And don't be afraid of asking for help.

You were not sent into this world to suffer, don't let anyone make you believe differently.
