DNFing at about 20 pages.
i could already tell how overly pretentious this book is, it’s like the author tried SOOOO hard to be “quirky” and “charming” and “whimsical” but failed so bad ☠️
it’s reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland in the way of its odd, nonsensical-ness, but just like way worse than AiW.
i can see why some kids might enjoy this, or adults who like it for the nostalgia of a fairytale-esque story, but it just is not for me.
i could feel it putting me into a reading slump trying to push past 20 pages, and i just couldn’t do that to myself when i’ve got a huge fall TBR.

Definitely a good book, but it does take awhile to get past the fanciful writing and strange names.

This is one book that I wish I had found when I was a kid — or had been written back then. I think I’d have appreciated it more? Anyway, it has the charm of the Dahl books but there is a dark undercurrent to them that makes them scary. But in a good way. Fine job I’m doing of explaining why I like this series, right? But I do!

2.75: the writing was very engaging and whimsical, but I truly liked the first half of the book while for the other half aahh I was not a big fan
Another one of my favorite books (and book series) from my childhood. This book (and the rest of the series) is so well written. I can’t even describe the warm, joyful, nostalgic feeling it gives me re-reading it, but wow it just brings me so much happiness. Every single character is a fantastic encounter and the setting (Fairyland) is whimsical and strange. UGH just everything about this book is perfect!! Please read it if you haven’t!!! 💖
Absolutely gorgeous writing. This is a wonderfully self-aware fairy tale, with a hard-earned adventure, and fantastic characters. If you liked McGuire's [b:In an Absent Dream|38244358|In an Absent Dream (Wayward Children, #4)|Seanan McGuire|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1525436165l/38244358._SY75_.jpg|59926216], this has a similar vibe, but it's slightly less dark. Strongly recommended, and now I'm going to read the rest of the series.
Completely charming. I never thought my favourite characters would be a key and a jacket.
