Was hopping for a more twisted ending.

Forsyth has a knack to embed real world events and history into his novels. This makes them realistic [to such extent that cliche "story that comes from the newspaper pages" rings very true] and able to completely attract the reader's attention to the very end.

While story does start with journalist investigation into death of the one of the Holocaust survivors and search for the surviving Nazis supported by notorious ODESSA organization, what makes this book a true masterpiece is a twist at the end. This twist changes everything and is in my opinion very realistic - no matter how much we like to boast that we are humanitarian and philanthropists personal issues are those that drive our actions in the end.

Excellent novel. If you like thrillers with a historical background do treat yourself with it.

Strong cold war thriller about a young journalist who learns a former SS man is still free in Germany and attempts to find him.

Really enjoyed this unusual mystery where a modern-day reporter decided to hunt down a former SS officer. I also liked that it was set in Germany. The style and facts woven through the story itself create the impression that this is a true story (which the sub-titles all say it isn't) although I think the author did scatter as many true facts as possible to create this feeling of authenticism. It is fast-paced and interesting and even has a "what happened to everyone" bit at the end (which was a bonus for a fan of tidy endings, like me!). Some might say what happens in the final showdown is a bit of a twist, but I saw it coming.
