These are some very unorthodox BOSS BATTLES. Where two end, the MAIN EVENT begins! Breakdown:
- The first chunk belongs to Ikalgo, our little octopus buddy, and his bunker chess match with Machine-Gun Shelly. At this point in the story, this plot seems like small beans, but it reveals enough about Ikalgo's character to make it compelling.
- END MINI BOSS BATTLES #1 + #2: If you were going to rate likability of characters in this volume, I would go: +Morel, +Youpi, -Knuckle, -Pouff. Their battles are quite confusing to summarize with all the strategies and characters at play (a Super Saiyan Lightning Killua cameo was the ultimate highlight). The battle is quite fun, though. But the main takeaways are that Pouff is an officious prick, Knuckle is far too emotional, Youpi matured right before our very eyes, and Morel is an absolute boss.
Unfortunately, everybody's plans are going right up the stinker. We seem to be done here.
- MINI BOSS BATTLE #3 INTERMISSION: Meanwhile, Gon, who is, again, our main protagonist, is still a whistling kettle at this point. The scene where Pouff enters the operating room with Gon and Pitou is riveting: While the two ants could immediately squash the boy, all the power belongs to his mercy. Not a sentence you would expect to see 10 volumes ago.
- BEGIN FINAL BOSS BATTLE: The volume ends on a high: Netero, the world's ultimate Nen user, unleashes his justice upon the Chimera Ant King who responds with... words. The dude really is just here to talk.
How many main antagonists do you know who are pacifists and prefer diplomacy while the protagonist demands war? This is a complex position for Netero as he actually sees some humanity in the king. However, he is also very much an ant, so his mere presence is a threat. So with the gloves off, we bid adieu to this volume.
