Mixed feelings. The central message was beautiful and I enjoyed the parts set in the present day. I found the intense religious context of historical part tedious to read.

An emotional and cleverly threaded book. I struggled with the flow and perhaps how the book transpired, but maybe as I enjoyed Shafak's other books more.

I loved this book for opening up the world of Rumi and Shams of Tabriz to me. But there were times where the dizzying array of characters (with chapters jumping from character to character) left me slightly confused. I also couldn't give it a full 5 stars because I feel like the ending was too rushed. I do wish the author spent more time narrating the time spent between Ella and Aziz.
