This is hilarious to read having read all of Irby's other work first, because this is the first and only book she doesn't realize that she is a capital L LESBIAN. Honestly, a fun first book from a woman whose voice only gets louder, funnier, and angrier as the years go on.
I knew that Irby was a brilliant and hysterical writer, and this book definitely does not disappoint. In addition to the laugh-out-loud moments I was expecting, many of the essays in this book are surprisingly touching and vulnerable. Come for the chapters on chronic diarrhea and body hair, and stay for the chapters on growing up poor, being black in America, and caring for a sick mother. This entire book is full of Irby's bravery in telling us everything about herself, and her generosity in letting us us relate.
Look, the personal essay is PLAYED OUT by this point, but Irby is something special, and doing it better than everyone else.

I'm the exact opposite of Irby in pretty much every way but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy her snarky books a heck of a lot.
I read “Meaty” due it being the selection of the month for my book club. Based on the cover I thought it was going to be about food and trying to persuade me to not meat (since everyone is now more health conscience). That couldn’t be further from what the book was about. The first few chapters of the book were pretty good, however after that I notice most of the book discussed all the author’s flaws about herself and many TMI things, which I rather not know about her in a sarcasm manner. Can a person really go on for chapters upon chapters about what they don’t like about themselves (seems more fitting for a diary). And the way the book ended left me like......huh? It was almost like she just said I done, don’t feel like writing anymore. There wasn’t a clear conclusion. Overall, this book was not my ideal work of literature but perhaps maybe her blog maybe more interesting.
Hilarious and raunchy. Part monologue, part recipe sharing, part childhood remembrances. So dang funny.
There’s a few select people to whom I would be comfortable recommending this so if you do proceed on your own, you’ve been warned you’re gonna hear a lot of fucks given.
