Fast-paced historical scifi adventure about 6 boys sailing the Polaris back from Brazil after a mysterious incident has killed many of the crew and the rest have abandoned ship. It turns out that they're not alone....Ideal for middle school readers who like a side of horror with their shipboard spec fic. See my full review here.

This one was a favorite of my son! He said it was scary, but not overly so. Loved the scientific speculation based on the zombie fungus, ophiocordyceps unilateralis. Pure fun!

Thanks to the @kidlitexchange network for the review copy of this book - all opinions are my own. This book was released on Halloween of this year (2017) and now I see why. I honestly just thought this was like a survival story of boys alone on a ship. It's actually quite creepy (in a good way).

Definitely recommend this read around Halloween, especially if you like stories of friendship and overcoming hardship to survive. And since it's middle grade, it was a pretty quick read.

What kind of ship's crew abandons the ship's boys to die on a ship with a murderous ant-beast? What a shitty crew.

It was fine, but I would consider the descriptions of the antagonist to be gross rather than scary.
I also had a very, very hard time buying that the fungus would turn you into an ant-person. That's not... how that works........? I just don't get it. A fungus cannot change a mammal into an arthropod! This kinda ruined the whole concept for me tbh.
Like, props for trying something new, and it certainly was creative, but also maybe there's a reason no one had come up with that idea before.
