Moby Dick: A Bullet Review
- By no means an easy read, but a worthwhile one. It will stick with me.
- Laughed out loud on several occasions. Cursed Ishmael's attention to detail on many occasions.
- Not enough Quequeeg
- Too many whale and whaling facts
- People from many cultural/religious backgrounds are part of the crew - unusual for it's time. A world aboard a ship.
- Last quarter of book = best quarter of book.
- Ending is action-packed...and mighty sad.
- Possible spoiler? 540 pages in this book. The Pequod does not encounter Moby Dick until pg. 514.
- Vengeance is futile.

Will this guy ever stop talking?
The book was definitely too filled with explanations about whales, sailing, trading, etc. Way too many technicalities, way too many breaks from the story.
It begins very interestingly, with the encounter and unlikely friendship with Queequeg, moving on into their first days at sea.
The endless encyclopaedia then begins, and takes most of the book, with very small moments given to the actual story. Sure, that’s a prompt image of how dull being at sea can be… the waiting and endless horizon.
Later in the end, the story comes back in full speed, and Moby Dick vs Ahab takes central stage. How terrible and tragic their encounter was, one could feel it from the author’s words.

I probably would never had read this on my own, but my bookclub decided to read it. And it actually turned out to be such a great read/listen. Listening was helpful to get through it, and there is a lot of information about whaling industry. While it was dense, I really liked the history and overview of the industry. I've been casually interested in whaling history since reading Endurance and their rescue by a whaling crew and seeing all the whales and birds while I traveling in the south Atlantic.
My bookclub has quite a few academics and an English professor. So we had interesting conversations about the symbolism of the book. There was some beautiful prose. My favorite character was Queequeg. I loved his resurrection scene. He had a work to do so he chose to live.
Poor Pip! Starbuck's monologue when he almost kills Ahab because he knows what is going to happen if the continue to follow his obsession.
I was trying to finish it before the bookclub meeting and so binge read the last chapters. The chase was SO exciting! I also didn't really know how it was going to end, so it was all a surprise. The description of how it ended was mind blowing. It was so good.
Probably not a book I'll read again, but definitely worth the time.
