Ok, so this book absolutely tore my heart out, put it back together, then tore it out once again. I am left feeling so devastated and yet so happy and fulfilled. It’s safe to say that if you were as invested as I was, you will 100% be in tears by the end. Roshani Chokshi really knows how to create beautifully developed characters that are so diverse both in personality and background. I’m also in love with Chokshi’s prose and the aesthetic she creates for this world.

When I first started this trilogy, I was worried because I had heard that it was very similar to Six of Crows. Boy was I wrong! The characters and circumstances of this trilogy are so different from Six of Crows. This trilogy is also heavily influenced by religion and ancient mythology, which made it a super fun read for me (a mythology buff).

The ending of all of the characters’ arcs were absolutely amazing. I thought it fit so well for each and every one of them. However, I did especially love Séverin’s ending and how it paralleled to some other parts of his past (more on that in spoilers).

My favorite characters are still Zofia and Enrique tho 👀

Anyways, if you’re apprehensive about reading this, I’m telling you: READ IT!

Spoiler
So where do I even start?! I think I’m just gonna do a breakdown of all the characters and such because I love all of them so much!

Séverin
Séverin’s character arc was so beautifully crafted. It was so interesting to watch as he changes from wanting godhood for power and so that he does not have to experience the same pain he did when he lost Tristan to accepting that he does not need to be a god, but to be surrounded by those that he loves and to make a difference in the world.  It absolutely broke me that he and Laila were not able to say “I love you” to each other, but I think that works perfectly for the two of them (right person wrong time and such). Also, when he takes in the two boys!!!! I thought that was a wonderful full circle moment for him. ALSO THE FACT THAT HE LIVES FOR ANOTHER 100 YEARS WHILE EVERYONE AROUND HIM DIES?! WTF!! Anyways, I loved it very much.

Laila
Laila went through so much in this book, my gosh! I was really expecting Séverin to die, not her. Well, I guess she didn’t die, but she did? I was a tad confused there, but it’s fine. I loved how she came to her friends in their dreams…like OMG that’s so cute :) I really don’t know what else to say, but I love Laila sm and I think her story arc was really well done!

Enrique
Oh Enrique, my favorite character…I love you more than words can say. Throughout this series, I related to Enrique the most. We both feel like we don’t really have a place to belong (we both have different reasons tho) and like no one really wants to hear what we have to say. I was pulling for Zofique this whole series and absolutely lost my $hit when they kissed! Someone said that they were in a polyamorous relationship with Hypnos, but I didn’t see it (believe what you will tho). I like to think that him and Zofia got married and had a wonderful life together. Him lecturing the little kids at the end and realizing that he was meant to become a professor was so in line with his character. I also thought it was super interesting how he decided he didn’t want to work with the Illustrados. I did like how he worked so hard on making sure all the Order of Babel’s treasures went back to their original country. I love Enrique so much and I’m so sad that I won’t be able to see any more of his character.

Zofia
My precious, beautiful Zofia. You are too great for this world. She had such great character development throughout this series. She was able to accept her emotions for Enrique, which was probably one of my favorite parts of the book. ZOFIQUE WAS SO AMAZING. She’s so caring and loving to others. I just can’t explain in words how much I love her.

Hypnos
My main problem with this book was the little development in Hypnos’s character. You can tell that he goes from someone who is more self-centered to a person who genuinely cares about others. He was also super understanding when Enrique and Zofia got together. I understand that it might be hard to focus on Hypnos’s character when the story is told through the POVs of Séverin, Laila, Enrique, and Zofia. I would’ve just liked to see more of his character in this book.
